Space. It means different things to different people. Room to grow and explore, the square footage of a home, the distance between ourselves and someone else. And then there are the spaces deep within ourselves where our memories and dreams exist, stuck in time between what was and what could’ve been.

Clementine checked her card to see if there were any more charges from Steve, but so far nothing. She’d texted him five times already, asking him where he’d gone, when would he be back, what should she tell Jonah? But he hadn’t responded once. She tucked the phone in her pocket and told herself to focus. Perched on a chair near the entrance, she was determined to hold Arianna to her promise that the next potential buyer who came in was indeed hers. Holding an information package, she scanned the pages as if she were really interested in the copy that she’d written, in an effort not to appear as if she was just waiting to pounce on the next person who walked in, which of course she was. The second she heard footsteps cross the entrance she looked up with a big smile on her face and moved forward to claim the visitor as her own.

“Welcome to The Point,” Clementine said, as she came face-to-face with Dominic Provato, who strolled into The Point like he owned the place, which he kind of did.

“Why, thank you,” he said, and leafed through the sign-in sheets.

“I thought that you were a customer . . . ,” Clementine mumbled, feeling stupid. She could smell his cologne, a mixture of salt and lemons that made her think of lemonade stands and how she’d promised Jonah she’d pick up ingredients on the way home so they could hold one this weekend. It always cost her more than they made, as Jonah inevitably spent more time talking than selling, telling people about the origin of lemons, the fact that they were actually first grown in Asia and were really a hybrid between a citron, and a bitter orange. Most people just moved on after that.

“How’s it going today?” Dominic asked.

“It’s good,” Clementine said. She stood up, suddenly feeling awkward, not knowing if she should hug him or shake his hand or apologize for bleeding all over his handkerchief the last time she saw him. So she folded her arms in front of her body instead.

“Arianna showing you the ropes? She’s my best sales associate.”

“I can tell.”

Dominic tapped the sign-in sheets and smiled. “Just don’t let her hog all the commissions. While it’s great for sales, it hasn’t made it easy to find anyone who can work with her.”

“I heard that,” Arianna said, walking up behind him and punching him in the arm.

“Good. You need to make sure Clementine gets to work with some real potential buyers, not just the ones you don’t want. Just because you’re family, doesn’t mean you can get away with not sharing.”

“Wait, you’re related?” Clementine said.

“Arianna’s my niece,” Dominic answered.

“Why didn’t you say anything?” Clementine asked Arianna.
